Whenever I see a post on social media about someone who is unhappy with a longarm quilting service, it breaks my heart. As a quilter myself, I know how much time, money, talent, and love goes into making a quilt, and that step of actually quilting the quilt is so important. So, how do we select the right person or company to longarm our quilts?
Ask for referrals from your fellow quilters. Who do they use and why?
If you can, visit the longarm studio. Look at completed works and samples, and check the back side of the quilt. How do the stitches look? How is the thread tension? If you can't visit the studio, ask for photographs of completed works, including close up images of the stitches and the back side of the quilt.
Ask questions! What machine does he or she use and why? Is it computerized or all free motion? How does he or she check tension during the quilting process?
Communication is key. Communicate your vision for the quilt and your expectations. Communicate your concerns, if you have any. Are the two of you on the same page?
What tips do you have for selecting a longarm service?
Happy quilting!
